As one of the last BMW E39 built - Sedans stopped production in June 2003, Touring were built until December 2003 - this 530i Touring Highline Sport Individual, a combination of Carbon Black paintfinish with soft Cinnamon Nappa Leather interior, is a rare gem.

Born in December 2003 and first registered in mid 2004, the Touring is in pristine condition and the ideal companion for our E39 M5, as our family daily driver.

INTERIOR

This was a looked after vehicle before coming to our hands. The interior was in excellent condition for its age and despite the 78 000km back in 2012, it showed little to no wear.

The interior detail was focused on removing the years of some very light grime and dust on every single surface, air vents, plastics, pedals, etc., leaving the car feeling and smelling as if it has just left the production line.

INTERIOR DETAILS
Despite the great condition of the interior, some improvements and fixed had to be done:

. The Anthracite Birch trim was removed to be polished as to restore a perfectly glossy and rich finish to this beautiful trim.

. Many broken/worn plastic bits replaced with new ones: centre console handle, broken trim pieces on the rear bootlid hatch, seat rail covers.

. Update of the centre console phone holder to support iPhone 4/4S.

LEATHER
To preserve the soft Cinnamon Nappa Leather, a thorough vacuum was done to remove any dirt on the surface or seams, as to avoid any damage through abrasion to the leather.

Next, the leather was gently washed, to eliminate any grime or oils, leaving the grain clean and ready for protection.

The last step was the application of a leather sealant, that protects against UV damage, helps prevent dye transfer and leaves the leather with a supple feel and natural sheen.

INTERIOR CARPETS
Floor mats are one of the areas in a car that see the most dirt, which is constantly being brought in by dirty shoes and pushed into the fibres of the velour.

To preserve this original set with the Cinnamon Nappa Leather edge decoration, it was imperative to properly protect it.

After a thorough wash, Textile Sealant was applied to seal the velour and help it repel dirt and liquids through its hydrophic properties, keeping them at the surface and making it easier to clean.

After vacuuming, the carpets were ready to be washed.

WASH
Always beginning with the wheels, as to avoid dirt splatter on washed paint, they were iron decontaminated and washed.

Next was to rinse the Touring and with a soft brush and a citrus cleaner clean all the small details as roof rails, water drains, door and bootlid jams, etc. Afterwards, the Touring was then gently washed with a lambswool mitt.

To finish up the cleaning process, the whole paint was iron-decontaminated, clayed and washed once again, so it can be spotless and ready for the polishing session.

POLISHING
The Carbon Black paint was not in good condition. Unfortunately, this was a car that was always badly washed, possibly through automatic washes, as the paint was filled with Random Deep Scratches (RDS) and heavy swirls.

A multi stage process had to be carried out to carefully restore the finish: Compound, Polishing and Finishing Polishing. With constant paint thickness measurements, each of the stages was repeated until a near perfect finish was achieved.

THE DETAIL THAT NEVER ENDS

Since the day it became ours, the M5 has been the focus of constant detailing attention.

Countless hours of cleaning, hundreds in polishing, repeated through the years of ownership, elevated the M5 to a pristine condition.

It is a drivers car, enjoyed as such, but maintained meticulously to concours status. It is hard work, but worth it every moment we get to enjoy driving it.

THE PREPARATION

The very first step for a successful detail, is to make sure that every surface is clean and free from contamination. Preparation is key in Detailing.

Before the initial wash, all rain drains, panel gaps, door jambs, nooks and cranies, where washed with 10:1 diluted All Purpose Cleaner. To avoid brake dust splatter on washed paint, the wheels were then washed next, without the use of acidic cleaners that damage the finish.

The paintwork is washed gently with a lambswool mitt and two bucket technique. Lastly, the M5 is then clayed, washed once again, dried and rolled into the garage for the next steps.

DETAILING ENGINE BAY PLASTICS

An important step for the engine bay detail of my Le Mans Blue M5, the cabin air filter and engine air filter housings, see a lot of grime, leaves and dirt accumulate after years of usage.

Not only will a dirty filter housing contribute to bad smells into the cabin, but can also get easily clogged and stop draining rain water as designed.

The whole system was taken apart and each piece was degreased, washed individually twice, as the intricate design proved to be a challenge to get all the dirt out. All metal clamps were polished. Plastic was then treated with UV protection.

CLEANING THE INTERIOR
Despite the relatively low mileage, the M5 interior was not in the best of conditions, as you can see on initial pictures from 2008.

After a proper dusting and vacuuming, the cleaning began by washing all plastics, including air vents and seat rails, with a diluted All Purpose Cleaner.

The leather was dirty and suffering from a bad attempt at leather coloring. It was intensely cleaned, removing years of body oils and grime. After treatment with a protector, it was now clean and with a natural sheen.

The decorative trim was removed - uncovering some lost coins in the process - and polished.

RESTORING THE LEATHER
The M5 went through a complete leather restoration, with the help from my friend Rui from Car Detail, in the summer of 2009.

To prepare for the repaint, we removed the front and rear seats, allowing for full treatment and avoiding overspray in the cabin. Next, we gently sanded and degreased the leather, ensuring a clean and smooth surface prior to repaint.

The repaint process was done in stages, controlling the finish as each step was done. The results were fantastic, with the leather feeling soft to the touch and with the natural black finish that rivals factory.

Years later, this restoration still withstands the test of time and mileage.

DETAILING LEATHER DOOR CARDS

The leather door cards were removed for a proper clean.

With a Q-tip, every little corner or small area was cleaned, removing a decade and a half of dust that accumulated in areas that are not easy to reach with the door cards installed.

All plastic mounting pins were replaced, as many were broken and creating loose sounds when driving over rough surfaces.

Leather was then washed and protected.

POLISHING
To greatly enhance the look and depth of the paint, have it pure and without defects, is a meticulous technical task that requires above all, patience.

Polishing, the process of creating a shiny, reflective surface, relies on the use of friction, temperature and abrasives, to reduce the uneven texture of a surface and make it as flat as possible.

And to achieve that absolute flatness, so reflection can be pure as a mirror, is the big challenge of polishing. To reach a 95% level of correction and flatness, that creates the highly reflective paint, is only possible through multiple stages of polishing, that go from the most to the least aggressive combination of polish and pad.

The M5 was spared no expense in time and process to get it perfect. Through multiple polishing steps, taking considerably more than 100 hours of polishing, the Le Mans Blue that was faded and swirled from improper care, was restored to a defect free finish, proper of concours condition.

Le Mans Blue is simply a stunning color, that when detailed to high standards, becomes rich, deep and glossy to a level capable of challenging the darker colors for reflectiveness. In my opinion, Le Mans Blue, with its elegance and sportiness, is one of the best colors for the E39 M5.

PROTECTING THE FINISH
After the polishing stage is complete, it is important to protect the results achieved.

Long gone are the days of carnauba waxes for paint protection, that depend on plant oils for its hydrophobic properties.

Now, technology is in and the Nano-Crystal Sealants have taken over, with its combination of organic and inorganic layers, that offer enhanced durability and shine that lasts for years.

It is that durability and protection, associated with proper washing techniques and detailing maintenance, that has kept the M5 always looking sharp since 2008.

Paint surface temperature easily above the + 20ºC required for the sealant application.

BMW E28 528I
Hidden in a garage in Monaco for many years, this 1984 BMW E28 528i in Alpine White became a time capsule covered in dirt.

Despite the low mileage, the abandon for such a long period of time did not do it any favors. The Alpine White was faded to beige, coated with deep swirls and scratches, while the interior was filthy to the touch of any surface.

This detail is focused to reverse the neglect... and restore the reason why such cars like this should not be forgotten.

BEFORE THE DETAIL
With dirt ingrained into every crevice, from the outside the E28 looked dull and considerably aged.

The chrome trim was spotted, etched and had no shine, while the black plastic parts were sun burnt into a dark grey. Window rubbers were dry, with a thick layer of caked on grime and moss growing on its edges.

Rough to the touch, the Alpine White was covered in contamination and had several large, dry resin drops. The whole car was in need of a very deep and thorough clean, before any polishing could begin.

WASH
After the removal of the hubcaps, the wheels and caps were decontaminated and washed.

Next, the attention turned to the rain drains that were clogged with dirt. With the help of a brush and Q-tips were it got too tight, these were clean until water could freely flow once again. The window rubbers were scrubbed multiple times to remove the grime, sand and moss that was so deeply-seated after so many years.

After the thorough clean on all the little areas, the E28 was washed, decontaminated with clay to restore a smooth, clean paint surface and prepared to be rolled into the garage so the polishing process could begin.

INTERIOR

While the focus of this detail was the exterior, this E28 couldn't go back without a detail on the interior. Control surfaces like the steering wheel were oily to the touch, leaving your hands filthy. The cloth seats were ingrained with decades old dust that would puff out at the slightest touch.

After a full vacuum clean, the cabin plastics were all carefully washed. The cloth trim on the doors and seats was given a gentle wash with a damp microfiber and textile cleaner. Stains were scrubbed and floor matts were washed.

Despite the short time spent, the interior was greatly improved, plastics with a matte finish, seats were inviting to use and the whole interior had now a fresh smell.

POLISHING
Very swirled and filled with random deep scratches, the Alpine White required a 3 stage polishing process to remove most defects and restore the color.

Despite white paintwork being hard to show defects, the miserable condition this Alpine White was on was perfect for 50/50 photos of the process of correction.

After compound, polishing and finishing, most of the swirls, etching and oxidiation that this E28 has accumulated had vanished, exposing a whole different shade of white.

RESULTS
This was one of the most satisfying details in terms of turn around for a few tens of hours spent.

An old car, with just over 100 000km done, forgotten and left standing with generations of dirt. But after some tender, love and care, it was brought back from the dead and restored to how it looked when delivered to its first owner more than 30 years ago.

Sometimes more than a brand or a special model, it is a car's history that makes it so special and this E28, in pristine condition, has that in spades. Welcome back to the road!

BMW E28 M535I

The origin of what we know now as M-Technic package option for BMW, the E28 M535i offered over the normal 535i version a revised aerodynamics package, suspension, M tri-colored lapels on the seats and option for a dogleg close-ratio Getrag gearbox.

Despite not being a true, hand built E28 M5 with the phenomenal S38 engine, the M535i drives and feels with a mechanical and connected feeling that is legitimate of a BMW Motorsport car, even if never intended as such.

BEFORE
The Diamond Black E28 M535i came in specifically for an exterior beautification process.

The paint was faded and tired, due to being riddled with swirls and random deep scratches (RDS) obtained after decades on the road.

Front and side trim had lost its black sheen, replaced with a grey color, etched with the deaths of millions of bugs and insects.

A good thorough clean was given to all parts of the exterior, before proceeding to the correction process.

POLISHING
Free of contamination, the 2 stage polishing process began, gently and with precision slicing away the swirls and RDS done to the paint.

Beneath the damage was a beautiful, reflective color, now free to shine without interruption.

THE RESULTS
A beautiful shape to admire, the sharknose E28 looked like new upon completion of the detail.

The Diamond Black reflected rich colors, with a depth and gloss to it that was just stunning.

Truly one of my favorite details on one of my favorite BMW 5 series shape.

This beautifully preserved E34 M5, a 3.6l version with the narrow nose kidneys, is in excellent mechanical condition.

Belonging to a friend and BMW M Enthusiast, that has helped me buy my own E39 M5, this M5 was well cared for.

BMW E53 X5

Born out of the relationship with Land Rover in the mid 90s, the X5 was BMW's first venture into the luxury Sports Activity Vehicle market.

This Oxford Green X5 model from early 2000 is in absolutely pristine condition, with only 28 000km on the odometer. There is still so much life in this M62 powered BMW.

This detail was focused on cleaning the 14 years of almost always garaged life and restore the new car shine and smell it deserves to have.

WASH

Despite the low mileage and the light usage, after 14 years there is always plenty of dirty and dust that settles itself in various places throughout the car.

After the initial rinse, every nook and cranny of the X5 was cleaned and washed with a soft hog hair brush and a mild All Purpose Cleaner (APC). The engine bay saw the same treatment.

The step above was then followed by dual bucket mode wash with a soft merino wool mitt and gently clayed to remove all contaminants on the paint surface, leaving the X5 prepared for the polishing session.

The interior of the X5 was in very good condition overall, only spoiled by the fact that the creme colour shows all stains and wear marks that it has accumulated throughout the 14 years.

A thorough clean was done to all surfaces: Complete vacuum, all plastics and air vents were washed, stains were removed from door cards and carpets, glass and window rubber seals cleaned, and leather washed and conditioned.

Unfortunately, due to time restraints, not many photos were taken of the cleaning process and results.

POLISHING
The Oxford Green displayed little swirling and not many random deep scratches, so an easy approach with a light polish and pad combination was preferred.

This process was to resolve the majority of the defects and preserve plenty of clearcoat for future corrections.

The deep green was restored and left gleaming almost as new, leaving this X5 looking like a time capsule back into the year 2000.

EXTERIOR DETAILS
To conclude the detail on the exterior, some last steps were taken.

The original wheels were removed and the wheel wells were cleaned and the plastics treated.

Before the special 19'' Individual wheels were installed, they were treated with specially designed sealant, to assure protection from brake dust and other contaminants up to 2 years,

All key locks were cleaned and polished, exterior plastics were treated and exhausts were polished.

RESULTS
It's fascinating how much the car has changed since it was delivered. It looks fresh, shiny and sharp and the new bigger wheels complete the package in a special way.

The Oxford Green is a classic colour that has so much depth and gloss when polished and now this X5 could show it with pride.

The owner was ecstatic with the results and anxious to drive this time capsule of the early 2000s.

The X5 left our installations ready to begin life again, as new.

Auto Detailing with Paint Correction on Black BMW 5 Series

Often times, it’s only the show cars or the garage queens that have their paint taken care of properly. This is unfortunate because it’s the daily drivers that will really benefit from the regular maintenance and protection. Many people don’t bother taking care of their daily driver because they think, “it will just get dirty tomorrow anyways.” While this may be true, an unprotected car’s finish being subject to the abuse of daily use is likely to not last very long. Black cars, like this 5 series for example, need very regular and carefully performed maintenance in order to stay swirl free. If this maintenance isn’t kept up the vehicle will quickly be covered in very visible wash scratches.

While having a hard life up until now, this black M5 came in for one of our most comprehensive packages — the Connoisseur Detail. This is the package we suggest to customers who are really looking for maximum paint correction. Cars that receive this detail will go through a three stage paint correction process to really make sure any surface scratches (that don’t require wet sanding) will be removed. Depending on factors such as mileage, weather, where the vehicle is stored and so on, this should generally last the customer between 4 and 6 months. Watch the transformation this 5 series goes though from start to finish below!

While the vehicle may look good from afar, it’s not until we get up close that we really get a feel for how much damage there is to the paint.
