    50 Years of M at the Cars & Caffeine car show


    For the first time, a gathering of 50 vehicles spanning the 50-year history of BMW M were on display to the public in front of the BMW stand on Saturday, March 5 during the Amelia Cars & Caffeine car show. The group included vehicles brought by BMW Car Club of America M Chapter members from around the country as well as some interesting examples from BMW of North America's classic collection.

    Special thanks to BMW NA, BMW CCA leaders Esteban Valentin, Paul Seto and Matt Anderson AND most importantly those who displayed their cars!

    2023 BMW M3 Touring G81 Teased In “Iconic Pack” Official Video

    It was less than two weeks ago when BMW released “We are M” and now it’s back with another video to celebrate 50 years of M. Narrated as if we’re watching a documentary on National Geographic, “Iconic Pack” puts the spotlight on the M3 and M4. You’ll have to wait until the end of the video for the juicy part when the M3 Touring G81 appears.


    A reminder an M3 wagon is happening, “Iconic Pack” associates the M3/M4 with wild creatures racing towards the peak. The so-called “annual ritual” shows the sedan and coupe Competition models with and without xDrive, plus the convertible. All cars eventually make way for the new arrival, with the M3 Touring appearing from the 2:20 mark.

    One tidbit can be found in the video’s description, showing the M3 Touring has the highest fuel consumption of them all. Not that many will care, but the speedy wagon is rated at 10.3 liters / 100 km WLTP. BMW doesn’t include “M xDrive” in the description, but we know it’ll be automatic- and AWD-only. The fact it’s the thirstiest doesn’t come as a surprise since it should be the heaviest of the bunch.

    Lots Of New Or Updated M Models Arriving In 2022
    BMW’s teaser strategy is clear as the previous film had an M4 CSL easter egg and now the M3 Touring. The new Iconic Pack clip shows the Audi RS4 Avant competitor still wearing full camouflage attire with a sticker extending onto both doors. The “B’Ring It On” message next to the Nürburgring track’s layout likely includes some subtext. Specifically, the M division could be going after the fastest production wagon record at the Green Hell.


    Since the M4 CSL and M3 Touring have been teased, logic tells us BMW will introduce the new M2 and production-ready XM in the latter half of 2022. Meanwhile, the M division has already released a somewhat fresh product by giving the M8 lineup a subtle facelift.

    Iconic Pack: BMW M celebra con pintura especial para M3 y M4

    Como era de esperar, los BMW M3 (G80) y M4 (G82, G83) se presentan en el año del 50 aniversario de M GmbH con acabados de pintura especiales. En el vídeo “Iconic Pack”, la empresa con sede en Garching celebra sus iconos con un estilo que recuerda a los documentales de animales, presentando al M3 y al M4 como peligrosos depredadores en su entorno natural: en carreteras sinuosas, varios miembros de la manada siguen su ritual anual y aunque la evolución ha llevado a manifestaciones muy diferentes, el núcleo del ADN siempre permanece igual. Las últimas variantes incluso utilizan las cuatro patas , lo que les otorga ventajas de tracción decisivas al perseguir picos nevados.


    Al igual que los pavos reales, algunos representantes usan colores expresivos para una apariencia particularmente impresionante: los acabados de pintura especiales en el motor y el capó del maletero aún no se discuten en detalle, pero es probable que eso cambie pronto. Hace unos meses, presentamos la técnica con la que se puede aplicar la pintura bicolor en fábrica: porque la pintura no se carga electrostáticamente y en su lugar se aplica con un chorro de precisión milimétrica , a diferencia de antaño, incluso los motivos complejos no ya tienen que estar enmascarados - al menos siempre y cuando sean bicolores como mucho, porque para acabados multicolores como en el caso del BMW 99 El 8 x Jeff Koonsel cuerpo seguirá siendo enmascarado en horas de trabajo manual.[​IMG]

    El video "Iconic Pack" termina con un ritual pocas veces visto en el estacionamiento más alto del macizo montañoso nevado.     Múnich / Dingolfing.La planta de BMW Group Dingolfing está probando un nuevo proceso de pintura sin exceso de rociado que permite utilizar varios colores de pintura y aplicar diseños sin estarcidos ni enmascarar el vehículo. El método de aplicación altamente innovador no solo aumenta el grado de individualización de los clientes, sino que también contribuye a la sostenibilidad al reducir los residuos y el consumo de energía. La tecnología se está utilizando por primera vez en 19 BMW M4 Coupés, que pronto saldrán de la línea de producción en Plant Dingolfing con pintura personalizada en dos tonos e identificación M4 en el capó y el portón trasero.

    Milan Nedeljković, miembro del Consejo de Administración de BMW AG, responsable de Producción: “Esperamos los más altos estándares de eficiencia, sostenibilidad y digitalización de nuestra producción.     BMW Group desarrolló el nuevo proceso de aplicación EcoPaintJet Pro para capas base a base de agua y capa transparente 2K en colaboración con la empresa de ingeniería mecánica y de plantas Dürr. En el procedimiento convencional, la pintura se atomiza mediante una campana giratoria de 35 a 55.000 revoluciones por minuto y se adhiere electrostáticamente al cuerpo. El nuevo método funciona sin electrostática y se basa en cambio en la aplicación a chorro. La pintura se aplica mediante una placa de orificio que permite una alta definición de los bordes con un espesor de pintura variable de entre 1 y aprox. 50 milímetros. Esto requiere la máxima precisión tanto del robot como de la tecnología de aplicación. También significa que se pueden usar dos colores diferentes de pintura, por ejemplo, para un techo en contraste, y se pueden aplicar rayas y otros diseños, por ejemplo, en el capó. El enfoque de la tecnología y el desarrollo de materiales estaba en lograr el máximo rango de aplicaciones. Ahora será posible pintar todos los componentes exteriores, ofreciendo a los clientes opciones prácticamente ilimitadas para la individualización.

    Hasta ahora, los diseños personalizados como este solo se pueden realizar mediante enmascaramiento manual. Con la nueva tecnología se eliminarán los costes de material y personal que antes implicaba, haciendo posible realizar estas opciones a menor coste. Este innovador proceso también evita la llamada sobrepulverización, es decir, el exceso de partículas de pintura, que por lo tanto ya no tiene que desecharse. Otra contribución a la producción sostenible proviene de un menor consumo de energía: dado que ya no es necesaria la separación de la pintura, la cantidad de aire necesaria también es menor. Aproximadamente en 7.000 horas de funcionamiento, esto se traduce en un ahorro de energía de más de 6.000 megavatios hora y reduce la huella de carbono en casi 2.000 toneladas por año. Continuará el desarrollo de tecnología de pintura innovadora para otras aplicaciones en serie.

    Con la pintura para la serie pequeña M4, BMW Group está probando las posibilidades del nuevo proceso. Estos vehículos únicos se utilizarán inicialmente en la propia flota de la empresa.     Munich / Dingolfing. BMW Group Plant Dingolfing is piloting a new overspray-free painting process that allows several paint colours to be used and designs to be applied without stencils or masking the vehicle. The highly innovative application method not only increases the degree of individualisation for customers, but also contributes to sustainability by reducing waste and energy consumption. The technology is being used for the first time in 19 BMW M4 Coupés, which will soon roll off the production line at Plant Dingolfing with custom two-tone paintwork and M4 identification on the bonnet and tailgate.

    Milan Nedeljković, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Production: “We expect the highest standards of efficiency, sustainability and digitalisation from our production. This smart painting technology meets all the requirements for an innovative production process and also offers unique customer benefits.”

    The BMW Group developed the new EcoPaintJet Pro application process for waterborne base coats and 2K clear coat in collaboration with mechanical and plant engineering firm Dürr. In the conventional procedure, paint is atomised by a rotating bell with 35 to 55,000 revolutions per minute and adheres electrostatically to the body. The new method works without electrostatics, relying instead on jet application. The paint is applied using an orifice plate that enables high edge definition with a variable paint thickness of between 1 and appr. 50 millimetres. This requires maximum precision from both the robot and application technology. It also means two different colours of paint can be used, e.g. for a contrasting roof, and stripes and other designs applied – for instance, on the bonnet. The focus of technology and material development was on achieving the maximum range of applications. It will now be possible to paint every exterior component – offering customers virtually limitless options for individualisation.

    Until now, custom designs like this can only be realised using manual masking. With the new technology, the material and personnel costs this previously entailed will be eliminated, making it possible to realize these options at a lower cost. This innovative process also prevents so-called overspray, i.e. excess paint particles, which therefore no longer has to be disposed of. A further contribution to sustainable production comes from lower energy consumption: Since paint separation is no longer required, the amount of air needed is also lower. At around 7,000 operating hours, this results in energy savings of more than 6,000 megawatt hours and reduces the carbon footprint by nearly 2,000 tonnes per year. Development of innovative paint technology for further series applications will continue.

    With the paintwork for the M4 small series, the BMW Group is testing the possibilities of the new process. These unique vehicles will initially be used in the company's own fleet. Series introduction of the piloted paint process is scheduled to begin in 2022 in the BMW Group production network.

    A mi también. Ayer leí que en otros países ya sale en el configurado. Y que en algunos 200$ y en otros 400$. Aquí todavía no sale.

    De todas formas, me gustaría q solo fuese delante. Estoy penando lo del i4 y me gusta el borde azul que lleva el de las ruedas. Podrían hacer uno específico para los eléctricos llevando borde azul, aunque lo mismo no quedaría bien al llevar esa forma el logo.

    Al llevar paquete M lo puedes pedir, en España todavía no, pero no me gustan todas, solo pondría la delantera, las demás me gustan con el aro azul de la serie “i”

    Enthusiasts celebrate 50 years of BMW M.

    We recently featured a review of the latest in the BMW M division (February 23 Your Car) showcasing the superior performance, power and good looks that come with the badge, and this year the iconic M reaches its 5o-year milestone.

    It is, without doubt, one of the best-known names in the business. Since 1972, it has created some of the most desired performance cars, consistently delivering vehicles that have gained the attention of motoring enthusiasts the world over.

    BMW M GmbH, formerly BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG BMW M (“M” for “motorsport”) and was created as part of BMW’s racing program.

    With so many attributes, it’s little wonder drivers are so attracted to the M factor

    Headquartered in Germany, M models are tested and tuned at BMW’s private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit. The M Performance Series delivers breathtaking speeds, the M4 Coupe doing 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds with Competition Package, the M3 Sedan in 3. and the M2 Competition Coupe 4.0 seconds.

    BMW M1 Pro Car.
    For those with cash to spare, an M package is available on many BMW models and typically includes larger wheels and performance tyres, sport seats, M sport steering wheel with paddle shifter, often with larger air intakes, plus an aerodynamic kit. Calipers are in blue with the M logo, with brakes that offer superior response, fade resistance and optimum pedal feel.

    With so many attributes, it’s little wonder drivers are so attracted to the M factor. Here, we take a walk down memory lane at some of BMW M’s finest creations.

    BMW M1

    The M1 was seen as the first M-car.
    Arguably one of BMW M’s most recognisable cars, the M1 was the first car to feature that iconic letter. Making its debut at the 1978 Paris Motor Show, the M1’s wedge shape was an instant head-turner, while its 277bhp six-cylinder engine backed up these looks with some serious performance too.

    Just 460 examples were ever created, while the M1 was then a feature in the one-make Procar racing series.

    The M635CSi was based on the regular 6 Series.
    Though many might lean towards the M535i, we’d have to pick out the beautiful M635CSi as another key entrant on this list. BMW M took the elegant lines of the 6 Series and installed a 282bhp engine to give it a whole lot of punch.

    Extremely limited in number, the M635iCSi commands serious attention, even today.


    BMW M5
    Few could’ve imagined that the arrival of the original M5 would go on to start a lineage of cars stretching for decades. On the outside, it looked like a humble saloon car, but it packed the same four-value straight-six as the M635CSi, exceeding the amount of power you got from the regular 518i by nearly three times.

    The E30 M3 has now reached cult status.
    It was in 1986 that BMW M would create one of its most iconic models – the M3. This compact saloon car was an instant success, with its four-cylinder 16-valve engine combined with a lightweight body to create an agile yet composed performance car.

    The BMW M5 returns
    The M5 made its triumphant return in 1988, bringing a straight-six engine – originally a 3.6-litre and later a 3.8-litre. Just as stealthy as its predecessor, this new generation of M5 brought a more refined character.

    Plus, it was available as an estate – or ‘touring’ – broadening its appeal and giving it some added practicality.

    BMW Z3 M Coupe

    The Z3 M’s looks were revolutionary at the time.
    In the late 90s, BMW created a real cult classic – the Z3 M Coupe. Known affectionately as the ‘clown shoe’ it featured the compact and lightweight body of the regular Z3 but took its power from the second-generation M3.

    Arrival of the E46

    The E46 M3 is seen as one of the all-time greats.
    The millennium saw the arrival of an M3 generation that would go on to define the sports car – the E46. Featuring more performance mechanicals than ever before, this third-generation M3 would manage 0-60mph in around five seconds yet could easily be driven every day.

    Later on in 2003 a lightweight CSL version would be created, utilising a variety of carbon-fibre elements to drive down weight and improve handling.

    The V10 M5 and M6
    BMW M went all-out in 2004 with the arrival of the V10-powered M5 and M6. The former was the most powerful ever made, bringing more than 500bhp and 520Nm to the table, with 0-60mph taking just 4.5 seconds.

    In fact, the M5 would do 124mph in just 15 seconds.

    The V8 M3
    BMW turned the dial up on the M3 in 2007, too, fitting its M3 with a new 4.0-litre V8 engine. It made the M3 into a proper muscle car, while a lightweight construction meant that the M3 still handled just as elegantly as its predecessors.

    Available as both a coupe and saloon, it proved a very popular generation of M3.

    1 Series M Coupe

    The new BMW 1 Series M Coupé.
    BMW M would go back to its compact roots in 2010 with the 1M Coupe, a punchy take on the then-new 1 Series Coupe. Kitted out with a straight-six engine, the 1M’s lightweight handling and strong performance made it into a cult classic.

    Even today, 1M values continue to rise.

    The M3 goes modern

    This generation of M3 took to turbocharging for the first time.
    In 2014 the M3 arrived with a revolution – a turbocharged engine. As well as the standard saloon, a coupe version – now badged M4 – was made available, while a more agile M3 CS would arrive later on.

    The M5 all-wheel-drive

    The M5 used a 4.4-litre V8 engine.
    BMW cars are famous for their rear-wheel-drive layout, but that all changed in 2017 with the arrival of the new M5. It used a clever all-wheel-drive system – as well as a 4.4-litre V8 engine – to bring brutal acceleration but a whole lot of traction too.

    BMW M turns to SUVs
    BMW M had already made a brief foray into the world of SUVs, but in 2019 it created some of its most powerful with the X3 M and X4 M. Both used the same 3.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, while more powerful Competition versions came with a fearsome 503bhp.

    A striking M3 arrives

    The modern M3 packs more tech than ever.
    But in 2021 the fun would start with the arrival of the G20-generation M3 Competition and M4 Competition. With its opinion-dividing styling, this new generation of M3 and M4 didn’t hold back in terms of performance and design, while an upcoming M3 Touring will give enthusiasts the car they’ve been wanting for years.

    The Concept XM

    BMW M has already showcased an awareness of the future with its i4 M50 – the division’s first electric car, but the BMW Concept XM looks ahead to the most powerful BMW M car ever to go into series production, set to begin at the end of next year.


    The newly developed M Hybrid drive system delivers up to 550 kW (750 hp). the experience allows the driver to glide along in near silence while enjoying the high performance, M style. It’s characterised by striking, sculpted surfaces and extravagant lines to create a bold new design for the badge.

    The future
    From here, we can only see the number of electric M cars increasing as demand for EVs surges. One thing is for sure, the future looks good for the M division.

    Munich. 50 years of BMW M and the 50th staging of the Nürburgring 24 Hours - this year’s Eifel endurance classic is all about special anniversaries. It will also be the first outing for the new BMW M4 GT3 at the highlight of the Nordschleife season. A strong contingent of BMW M Motorsport works drivers will have their sights set on challenging for overall victory. In total, BMW M Motorsport teams will field no fewer than seven BMW M4 GT3s in the Nürburgring 24 Hours.


    ROWE Racing competes with two BMW M4 GT3s in the Nürburgring 24 Hours. Alternating at the wheel of one of the two cars will be Augusto Farfus (BRA), Philipp Eng (AUT), Nick Yelloly (GBR) and Connor De Phillippi (USA). The team’s other BMW M4 GT3 will be driven by Nick Catsburg (NED), Marco Wittmann (GER), John Edwards (USA) and Sheldon van der Linde (RSA).



    Driving the BMW M4 GT3 for Schubert Motorsport will be BMW M Motorsport works drivers Jesse Krohn (FIN), Jens Klingmann (GER) and Alexander Sims (GBR). The BMW Junior Team, consisting of Max Hesse (GER), Neil Verhagen (USA) and Dan Harper (GBR), will also start in a BMW M4 GT3. This will be run by BMW M Team RMG at the Nürburgring 24 Hours.



    Walkenhorst Motorsport will field three BMW M4 GT3s in the PRO, Pro-Am and AM classes at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. Preparations begin this Saturday (26th March) with race one of the Nürburgring Endurance Series (NLS). The prologue, with the qualification race, will take place from 6th to 8th May, before the 24-hour race itself takes centre stage from 28th to 29th May.

During the development of the BMW M4 GT3, we gained an awful lot of experience with the car on the Nordschleife. That will now be very valuable to us in the preparations and the race. Our BMW M Motorsport works drivers are real Nordschleife experts, as are the teams, therefore we have all the ingredients in place to go into this iconic race with a healthy portion of optimism.”



    Nick Yelloly (ROWE Racing): “I am excited to get back to the Nordschleife with ROWE Racing. It’s my favourite circuit and the 24 Hours is without a doubt my favourite event. I love the atmosphere. We won it in 2020, I was on pole in 2021 but unfortunately had problems in the race, so we have to make sure we return to the front this year with our new BMW M4 GT3.”



    Augusto Farfus (ROWE Racing): “I am very excited to participate with ROWE Racing in the Nürburgring 24 Hours. The team has been among the most successful GT3 teams in the sport. I never had the chance to drive for them, so I am very excited to do that now. Our line-up is extremely strong, so I think we have all the right cards to be very strong.”


    Connor De Phillippi (ROWE Racing): “Returning to the Nürburgring in the new BMW M4 GT3 is going to be a major highlight in my 2022 season and I’m so excited to be a part of the programme! It is my favourite event of the year, with one of the most unforgettable racing atmospheres and I cannot wait to be back driving there with ROWE Racing.”


    Nick Catsburg (ROWE Racing): “I am already really looking forward to the Nürburgring 24 Hours. This is my favourite event, and our overall victory in 2020 is obviously one that I will never forget. It is going to be fantastic to line up at the classic again with ROWE Racing and the new BMW M4 GT3.”



    John Edwards (ROWE Racing): “The Nürburgring 24 Hours is the most intense race on earth. There’s nothing like a 24-hour race at the most challenging and rewarding track on the planet! Last year, we had a good car but some bad luck put us out. This year, we have a new car and I am very confident.”



    Jens Klingmann (Schubert Motorsport): “The absolute highlight of the season marking the 50th anniversary of BMW M is the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring, and the objective is clear: to return to Munich with the 21st overall victory. That would be the best possible birthday present for BMW M. Last year, I was able to compete on the Nordschleife with the BMW M4 GT3 which allowed me to gather some initial experience and I am looking forward all the more to the Nürburgring this year. I think that we have a pretty strong package overall with Schubert Motorsport and the BMW M4 GT3.”



    Alexander Sims (Schubert Motorsport): “I am really looking forward to driving the BMW M4 GT3 on the Nordschleife. I’ve heard good things about the car in its development and so to drive it on one of the best tracks in the world will be another great experience with BMW. As always though, we compete to win so the focus will be on understanding and optimising the package as best as we can to be well prepared for the 24 hours.”



    Max Hesse (BMW Junior Team): “We are really looking forward to going racing again on the Nordschleife. This is the first time we will have driven the BMW M4 GT3 there, but BMW M Team RMG already gained experience with the car on the Nordschleife last year. That will definitely be beneficial. We will use the first NLS races and the qualification race to prepare meticulously for the 24-hour race. It is about finding a good rhythm, practicing driver changeovers and pit stops, and fine-tuning the set-up. It would be nice to have every kind of weather during the preparations, as we all know that the weather can change very quickly on the Nordschleife. All three of us are very much looking forward to the coming weeks at the Nürburgring.”

    2022 BMW Passion Tour To Mark 50 Years Of M With Performance Cars

    After the inaugural edition last year, the BMW Passion Tour is back for 2022 to celebrate half a century of the M division. To mark the milestone, the company’s French division is putting together an ensemble of high-performance cars that enthusiasts will be given the opportunity to drive. Attendees will be able to hop behind the wheel of the latest M3 or M4, both in Competition guise.


    Alternatively, fans of the brand will have the chance to drive a variety of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles. The BMW Passion Tour is going to include off-road rests with models featuring xDrive, as well as road tests with two-wheelers from the Motorrad division. To properly signal half a century of “the world’s most powerful letter,” the company is bringing an M2 CS Racing.

    This year’s BMW Passion Tour will kick off on May 21 and 22 at Circuit Bugatti Le Mans. Next is Circuit of Nevers Magny-Cours on June 18, followed by Circuit Paul Ricard F1 on October 9 and 10. We’re being told there will be various workshops focused on technology and mobility solutions, along with a lifestyle boutique.



    It’s An Event For The Whole Family
    The 2022 BMW Passion Tour won’t be just for adults as the event will include entertainment for kids. Parents will be able to hit the track with their very own vehicles. An aerobatics show is on the agenda, as are a few surprises the company isn’t willing to divulge for now. Hopefully, some of the exciting M cars arriving this year will make an appearance.


    Speaking of which, the M4 CSL is weeks away from its hotly anticipated reveal. We’ve just learned about the M3 Touring debuting in June, with the M2 and XM to follow. This golden anniversary for the M division is rather busy considering we’ve already seen new additions to the portfolio such as the X7 M60i and M760e and we’ve also heard news about a hot i7 M70 due in 2023.

    Munich. For BMW M Motorsport, this year’s 24-hour race at the Nürburgring (GER) is dominated by the 50th anniversary of BMW M. Many activities are planned, and the ‘50 years of BMW M’ theme will be a prominent feature out on the track. BMW M Motorsport team Schubert Motorsport will compete with a BMW M4 GT3 sporting a special anniversary livery, which will be unveiled this weekend during the qualifying races on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.

    “The Nürburgring and the 24-hour race there are inextricably linked with the 50-year history of BMW M,” said Franciscus van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH. “The fact that the Schubert Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 starts this race with a special livery in our anniversary year underlines this close association. The design, which incorporates our traditional BMW M colours in a very modern way, looks fantastic. We are looking forward to seeing the BMW M4 GT3 in this livery on the Nordschleife.”

    The anniversary livery is reminiscent of 50 successful years of BMW M in motorsport, and combines tradition with modernity. The classic BMW M colours of blue, red and violet – from the year the company was founded, 1972 – have been incorporated in the dynamic, modern design of today’s BMW M Motorsport liveries. The number 50, which will glow in the dark thanks to a special foil, and the BMW M logo also refer to the 50th anniversary of BMW M.

    The Schubert Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 will be driven at the 24-hour race by BMW M Motorsport works drivers Jesse Krohn (FIN), Jens Klingmann (GER) and Alexander Sims (GBR), as well as Niklas Krütten (GER). The endurance classic on the Nordschleife takes place from 28th to 29th May.
