Charging Guidelines From BMW v2
There have been extensive conversations about battery charging with conjecture and input from many sources. However, BMW is very clear about charging and storing the battery on the i4. The information here are the official recommendations exclusively from BMW direct sources (listed below) in order to help answer any charging and warranty questions. It is important to note that these recommendations are provided absent of any personal opinions and speculation.

Definitions:
- SoC. A percentage amount, that refers to the "State of Charge" of the High Voltage / Drive battery.
- AC Charging. Charging with Mode 2 or Mode 3 charging cables. This means using a charging cable plugged into a regular household outlet (Mode 2) or into a dedicated 240 VAC circuit with a special plug (such as NEMA 14-50 or others) or hardwired (Mode 3).
- DC Charging. Charging with Mode 4 charging cable also referred to as DC charging cable. For this sort of charging you have to use a public fast charger also known as DC Charging Stations.
BMW i4 general charging recommendations regardless AC or DC Charging:
To optimize the service life of the high-voltage battery, note the following:
- Preferably charge at AC charging stations for daily use.
- Keep the charge level between 10% and 80% if possible
- Recharge the high-voltage battery as close to a planned departure as possible.
BMW i4 DC charging specific recommendations:
Charging with a set charging target is especially suitable for charging at DC charging stations.
- A target value of 80% is recommended for optimal use of the function.
- Target values below 20% cannot be set.
- To be able to achieve the maximum charging speed, "Fan loudness" must be set to Unrestricted. MENU > Vehicle Apps > Charging > Fan Loudness.
- To get the most efficient charging out of a charging station, use the high voltage battery preconditioning feature. This can be activated one or two ways: By navigating using BMW navigation to a DC fast charging location as the destination, or (if equipped) by manually turning on battery preconditioning: MENU > Vehicle Apps > Charging > Precondition Battery
BMW i4 Storage recommendations:
To optimize the service life of the high-voltage battery, note the following:
- If possible, park the vehicle with a charge level between 30% and 50%.
- Do not leave the charging cable connected.
- Do not park the vehicle for longer than 14 days if the electric range is exhausted
- Park the vehicle with a battery charge state between 30% and 50%.
- Do not leave the charging cable connected.
- Check the battery charge at least once within 6 months.
- Charge up to 50% if the battery charge state is below 10%.
MY22/23 BMW i4 High Voltage Battery specific warranty:
- BMW warrants the high‑voltage lithium‑ion battery assembly against defects in materials or workmanship for a period of 8 years/100,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
- Battery performance and durability, including high‑voltage lithium‑ion batteries, is temperature‑dependent. While battery capacity increases in higher temperatures, colder temperatures will lower the battery’s capacity.
- Extreme high and/or low temperatures may impact the battery’s service life.
- The high‑voltage lithium‑ion battery requires no maintenance except for keeping the vehicle’s high‑voltage lithium‑ion battery charged to proper specifications; refer to the Owner’s Manual.
- BMW i-Warranty Guidelines: Claims cannot be accepted for technical defects or excessive capacity loss caused by an accident for the the following reason (not an exhaustive list of reasons): The instructions on use, maintenance and care of your BMW i vehicle (especially according to the owner’s manual) have not been followed.
