BMW M and the Red Bull Driftbrothers, Episode 2.

Munich. Let’s drift! The two new BMW M4 Competition models (combined fuel consumption: 10.2 – 9.9 l/100 km according to WLTP; combined CO2 emissions: 233 – 227 g/km according to WLTP) being driven by the Red Bull Driftbrothers are now ready for the racetrack. Backed by the BMW M GmbH, the brothers Elias Hountondji (35) and Johannes Hountondji (40) have completed the conversion and preparation of their new vehicles for the 2021 season of the Drift Masters European Championship. On 10 and 11 July during the season start of the series in Greinbach (AUT), the Driftbrothers will be taking the BMW M4 Competition to the starting grid for the very first time.
“I am deeply impressed with what the Red Bull Driftbrothers have managed to coax out of our vehicles and wish both of them every success for the start of the season. The result also shows how good a basis the BMW M4 Competition provides for motorsport use. From the start of its development, we had designed the production vehicle to also form the basis for our GT icon, the BMW M4 GT3, which we officially presented during the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring almost two weeks ago,” says Markus Flasch, CEO of the BMW M GmbH.
Elias and Johannes Hountondji have modified both BMW M4 Competition models comprehensively in order to adapt them to the special demands of drifting. They doubled the peak performance of the straight six-cylinder power unit of the BMW M4 Competition to 1,050 hp and increased maximum torque to almost 1,300 Nm, this being absolutely crucial for drifting. Elias Hountondji speaks with admiration for the production engine’s massive potential. “It is by nature a genuine racing engine in a road-legal car, so to speak. When you look at each component of this engine, it is clear that many engineers have put a lot of thought into creating an optimal design,” the younger of the two Driftbrothers says. In order to achieve the massive increase in performance, the two brothers installed, among other things, a special, particularly efficient cooling circuit along with an additional second cooler at the rear.
Moreover, the aerodynamics were extensively modified and optimised for drifting. Besides benefitting from their own experience, the Driftbrothers also relied on the expertise of BMW design experts. Virtually all newly designed aerodynamics components were manufactured exclusively at BMW M Prototype Construction. “It was a great honour for us to collaborate with experts from the design and prototype construction departments. With their help we were able to implement our ideas perfectly,” says Johannes Hountondji.
For example, the Driftbrothers’ BMW M4 Competition was fitted with a new BMW kidney grille to optimise the supply of air to the engine compartment.
Furthermore, carbon was used to produce a new spoiler lip (gurney) for the tailgate, side coverings for the rear diffuser and attachments for the side sills from the M Performance Parts portfolio. These were complemented by so-called winglets, which optimise airflow at the front splitter and behind the front wheels as well as in front of the rear wheels. Should the need arise during the course of the season, the production of an air scoop for the bonnet would also be possible.
Following the season start in Austria, the Red Bull Driftbrothers will be competing in a further three rounds of the Drift Masters European Championship, the world’s leading drift series. The second and the third round will be held in Riga (LAT) on 30/31 August, the season finale in Tiflis (GEO) on 4/5 October.
The Red Bull Driftbrothers have participated in the Drift Masters European Championship since 2018. The 45 best drivers from Europe, the USA and the Middle East compete in this invitation series. For some years now, Elias and Johannes Hountondji have ranked among the top drivers in the drifting scene and were, among other successes, 2017 King of Europe champion and vice champion. In 2016 and 2017, they also seized the team title there. Moreover, this year, the brothers will be making guest appearances during the MotoGP race at the Sachsenring (GER) and the Red Bull Ring (AUT), as well as during the Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix, likewise at the Red Bull Ring.

Los coches se prepararon en solo 8 semanas y el proceso implicó una revisión completa de casi todo lo que rodea al coche. Desde la aerodinámica hasta la geometría de la suspensión y todo lo demás, los muchachos tenían mucho trabajo. Los motores S58 tienen turbos nuevos y más grandes, un radiador más eficiente y muchos otros complementos. Según el video, los motores ahora producen más de 1.000 CV y casi 1.300 Nm de par.


Eso es básicamente el doble de la potencia que generan los autos en la apariencia estándar. El escape también tuvo que ser modificado y, en lugar de que los tubos de escape vayan debajo del parachoques trasero, se han redirigido a la ventana trasera y parecen absolutamente locos. El kit de carrocería también es una locura, como señala Flasch e incluso la librea parece encajar perfectamente. Definitivamente, quemar goma en estos autos será un placer, como señaló Markus Flasch después de dar una vuelta con uno de ellos.

BMW cars have been the weapon of choice for many drifters over the years. Their rear-wheel drive setups combined with powerful engines up front made for a tantalizing proposition from the get go. Even in standard guise, most BMW M cars would be good enough for prolonged drift sessions. When the BMW M division gets officially involved, some amazing projects can pop up, like the one with the M4 Competition and Red Bull Driftbrothers.

The team from Germany made headlines as it is made up of family members. They truly are brothers, not just in name, but also in real life. And they do sign off on some amazing drifts. For their latest projects, they joined forces with BMW M and created two identical BMW M4 Competition drift cars that have just been unveiled and taken around the Red Bull Ring for the first time, in the presence of Markus Flasch, the CEO of the company.

The cars were prepared in just 8 weeks and the process involved a complete overhaul of almost everything around the car. From the aerodynamics to the suspension geometry and everything in between, the guys had their work cut out. The S58 engines got new, bigger turbos, a more efficient radiator and many other add-ons. According to the video, the engines now make over 1,000 HP and almost 1,300 Nm of torque.

That’s basically twice the power the cars make in standard guise. The exhaust also had to be modified and instead of the tailpipes going under the rear bumper, they have been rerouted to the rear window and look absolutely crazy. The body kit is crazy too, as Flasch points out and even the livery seems to fit the bill perfectly. Burning rubber in these cars will definitely be a pleasure, as Markus Flasch pointed out after taking one of them for a spin.

El drifting está de moda, tanto que las marcas ya empiezan a implicarse de manera oficial en los diferentes campeonatos. BMW acaba de anunciar su presencia oficial en el Campeonato Europeo Drift Masters, y viene metiendo miedo.

La firma alemana ha revelado su alineación para esta temporada y va a poner en pista no uno, sino dos coches: dos espectaculares BMW M4 Competition vestidos con los colores de guerra de Red Bull.


BMW y Red Bull se dan la mano en el drifting



Los pilotos encargados de poner estas bestias de lado y echando humo serán los apodados como Red Bull Driftbrothers: los hermanos Elias Hountondji y Johannes Hountondji, con los dorsales 35 y 40 respectivamente. Precisamente han sido ellos los implicados en primera persona en la transformación de los coches.

Partiendo de dos imponentes BMW M4 Competition, los hermanos Hountondji han desmontado cada pieza y sustituido o modificado para hacer de estos deportivos de calle una pareja de máquinas de quemar gomas.



El motor original 3.0 de seis cilindros en línea y sobrealimentado por tecnología TwinPower Turbo de serie consigue 510 CV, pero ha sido apretado hasta conseguir el doble de su rendimiento, arrojando unas cifras de 1.050 CV y 1.300 Nm de par motor.

El bloque de serie se ha conservado, pero se han modificado elementos tan importantes en carreras como un nuevo circuito de refrigeración con radiador adicional situado en la parte trasera del coche y que respira a través de las tomas de aire instaladas sobre el techo.

Por supuesto que la aerodinámica ha sido otro de los elementos clave en la transformación para conseguir que sean los BMW M4 Competition sean rápidos aparte de espectaculares. Lo mejor es que los Driftbrothers han contado con la ayuda de BMW M para el diseño y realización de las piezas, por lo que se pueden colgar la etiqueta de coches oficiales.



Entre los elementos más característicos de estos coches están sus nuevos frontales. La cara de estos M4 se ha modificado notablemente y ahora el frontal tiene unos riñones verticales aún más grandes y casi totalmente abiertos. Se acompañan por unas canalizaciones inferiores más generosas y un splitter inferior para mantener el frontal bien pegado al suelo.

La fibra de carbono también ha cobrado una importancia especial para rebajar el peso de los coches, utilizándose en el splitter, el alerón del portón trasero, las taloneras o el difusor. Todas piezas provenientes del catálogo M.



En el interior se ha prescindido de todo lo innecesario, eliminando todos los revestimientos y accesorios superfluos para instalar una jaula antivuelco completa y unos nuevos asientos de competición Slide, además de un volante extraíble de carreras.



La primera aparición de los BMW M4 Competition de drifting pilotados por los hermanos Hountondji será durante la cita de Greinbach (Austria) los días 10 y 11 de julio.

Elias y Johannes Hountondji han estado entre los mejores pilotos en drifting durante años y fueron coronados campeones y subcampeones del Rey de Europa en 2017. En 2016 y 2017 también ganaron el título por equipos y han estado activos en el Campeonato Europeo de Drift Masters desde 2018. .
El DMEC es una serie de invitación para los mejores 45 conductores de Europa, Estados Unidos y Oriente Medio. El calendario 2021 ve eventos en Austria, Letonia y Georgia. Elias and Johannes Hountondji – aka the Red Bull Driftbrothers – revealed their new BMW M4 Competition drift-racing cars at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg, Austria. Here is all you need to know:
After just six months of collaboration with BMW M , the two athletes put the powerful 1,040hp cars to the test on the track for the first time ahead of the 2021 Drift Masters European Championship.
The Red Bull Driftbrothers team doubled the maximum output of the BMW M4's inline six-cylinder engine to 1,040hp and boosted the maximum torque to 1,280Nm, which is particularly important in drift racing. They also optimised the aerodynamics for transverse driving. Active support came from BMW design experts, while most of the aerodynamic parts were custom-made.
It's a big leap from Elias Hountondji's first BMW E30 from the '80s. He said: "There's a world of difference between our current M4 Competition cars in our drift spec and our first E30 318ES with a four-cylinder engine, 1.8L displacement and a measly 136 horsepower. Nearly 40 years of engineering artistry lie between the first BMW E30 and the freshly baked BMW M4. The only thing that's stayed the same is that the drivetrain is in the back and the engine is in the front - a recipe that still makes for a joy to drive!"
Ninety percent of all the parts in the new cars have never been installed in a drift car like this before. Elias Hountondji explains: "The goals for this year are ambitious. At the same time, we have to be realistic: the cars we've built now are, firstly, recently finished and, secondly, very complex. Of course, it would be a dream to be successful in the first competition, but from an engineering point of view, I think that's almost impossible. Not least because we haven't been able to test every other day over the last few months due to our tight schedule."
Thanks to his aerospace engineering background, Elias played a leading role in the building process: “As drivers, we also have to get used to our new cars first. I therefore believe that this year will be one of hopefully steep learning curves, so that in the best case we will soon be capable of winning. The ambition is to dominate sooner or later, and that's what the cars were designed for. However, we still have a long way to go before we get there.”
Elias and Johannes Hountondji have been among the top drivers in drifting for years and were crowned King of Europe champion and runner-up in 2017. In 2016 and 2017 they also won the team title and have been active in the Drift Masters European Championship since 2018.
The DMEC is an invitational series for the best 45 drivers from Europe, the USA and the Middle East. The 2021 calendar sees events in Austria, Latvia and Georgia. The drivers compete in knockout battle format, but, unlike most motorsports series, timing isn't decisive. Instead a jury evaluates four criteria: speed, drift angle, line choice and driving style.
The Red Bull Driftbrothers will show off their skills in the new cars to the public for the first time at the two upcoming Formula One Grands Prix at the Red Bull Ring, starting on June 25, 2021.

El primer fin de semana de competición del año: ¡dos días, dos carreras! Ven detrás de escena de nuestro segundo día de competencia del @Drift Masters European Championship 2021. El primer día exigió mucho y tuvimos muchos problemas con los autos. El corto tiempo de desarrollo fue claramente perceptible. Pero luego: llegó una noche en la que el equipo técnico hizo un trabajo estupendo: a la mañana siguiente tuvimos dos bebés completamente nuevos en el paddock ... ¡Pero entra y compruébalo por ti mismo!

Das erste Wettkampf-Wochenende des Jahres: Zwei Tage, zwei Wertungsläufe! Kommt mit hinter die Kulissen unseres zweiten Wettkampftages der @Drift Masters European Championship 2021. Der erste Tag hat uns viel abverlangt und wir hatten große Mühe mit den Autos. Die kurze Entwicklungszeit machte sich deutlich spürbar. Aber dann: Kam eine Nacht, in der die Tech-Crew grandiose Arbeit geleistet hat: Am nächsten morgen hatten wir zwei völlig neue Babies im Paddock stehen... Aber steigt ein und seht selbst!

The @Drift Masters European Championship round 4 was a major turning point for our G82 BMW M4 drift builds. The cars were competitive like never before! There was no lack of crazy builds: Nissan, Mercedes, Toyota, Subaru and of course BMW driftcars, all of which with crazy engine swaps ranging to S54, 2JZ, RB32, LSX and of course our S58 engines. After just a few months of development and build it's safe to say: We have pushed the cars to be on level with the top of what drifting has to offer.
