Toyota Celica revival imagined – with hot GR flagship
Toyota’s performance revival continues at full pace – but we feel it's time for one of the brand’s icons to make a return.

With Toyota’s Gazoo Racing (GR) performance arm now firmly established, it would be foolhardy for the division to rest on its laurels.

With rear-wheel-drive products like the flagship GR Supra and handling-focused GR86, alongside high-performance hot hatches – like the rally-inspired GR Yaris, and soon the more practical (but no less potent) GR Corolla – the GR portfolio is looking fairly plump.

There’s still numerous gaps in the product range – some of which have been filled in Japan with everything from GR-tweaked kei cars to minivans. On a global scale though, here at Drive we felt that Toyota’s sports car division needs a trio of actual sports cars – opening the door to a coupe to slot in between the GR86 and GR Supra.

Enter the Celica, an affordable coupe that saw seven generations between 1970 and 2006, and quickly earned a reputation for delivering plenty of enthusiast appeal with an approachable price point.






As with the final-generation Celica, our re-imagined 2022 Celica (imagined by Theophilus Chin) starts with a borrowed Corolla platform – perhaps not the most exciting starting point, but with plenty of tuning potential as part of Toyota’s modular TNGA chassis family.

That modularity opens the door to numerous powertrain options. Again, looking to the past, there’s room for engines from both the Corolla and the Camry, meaning minimum 125kW and 152kW base engine tunes from the donor cars’ 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre engines respectively.

For Australia the 2.5-litre engine would be a great base offering, with the Camry's 2.5-litre hybrid as a 'flagship', tuned to develop at least 170kW – with, hopefully, development room to pair it to a manual and conventional automatic, in place of the Camry's less-exciting 160kW with a CVT.

Being a Celica, and so as not to challenge the outright halo status of Toyota’s rear-wheel drive coupes, front-wheel drive will remain. Front-drive hot cars being a particular joy of their own – plus the Celica’s platform comes ready to run with double-wishbone independent rear suspension.



Rather than tear up the rule book and start from scratch, our eighth-generation Celica picks up where the angular seventh-gen car left off. Similarly low in profile, with an evolution of the triangular headlight from before.

Still a liftback body, still low and sleek, but now featuring the more horizontal elements found on Toyota’s mainstream models.

The slim slit grille harks back to the last Celica, while the front bumper intake draws a link to the current Corolla.

Along the sides there are pumped wheel arches, showing off widened front and rear tracks, with vented front guards, and rising bodyside feature lines and sill panels giving a purposeful sense of motion, even when standing still.

The rear highlights a strut brace-inspired tail-light panel that wraps the rear corners of the car, with LED lighting and vent-styled bumper garnishes emphasising the forward-motion design.


As striking as a new front-wheel-drive Celica could be, it’s just a starting point. The real halo car of a received Celica range would have to be a GR Celica, building on the legend started with the GT-Four Celicas of the fourth, fifth, and sixth-generation models.

For 2022 the GR Celica would take the familiar turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder 'G16E-GTS' engine from the GR Yaris and GR Corolla. Like those flagship models, the Celica would also come with a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox and variable GR-Four all-wheel drive.

Outputs for the GR Celica can only be range-topping, so we’d like to see the highest output 220kW engine from the GR Corolla, with the 390Nm output from the GRMN Yaris. Similarly, Torsen limited slip differentials front and rear, ‘circuit’ suspension and forged alloy wheels are non-negotiable.

Externally, we identified a range of Celica halo elements we just had to have: the GR-exclusive stepped central air intake, enlarged vents behind the front wheels, the GR Corolla’s trio of functional exhaust tips, an ST205 GT-Four-inspired bonnet scoop and, of course, GR’s iconic Frosted White paint.

Sadly, for the time being, there's no indication Toyota will put a new Celica into production, with the company instead content with the GR86 and GR Supra. We can dream...

Restored Mk4 Toyota Supra Goes Over Top Speed On Autobahn
For an old-timer who has gone under the knife, this one's pretty quick.

Ask any Supra enthusiast which one's the greatest of them all and you'll likely get the Mk4 as the answer. That's how popular the model is among tuners and car nuts alike, amplified onto pop culture by its Hollywood appearances. The venerable 2JZ inline-six engine is also one of the most flexible power plants out there, with tuners able to extract twice as much horses compared to its default tune.




Needless to say, the Mk4 Toyota Supra has gotten a lot of love – except for this one featured by AutoTopNL on YouTube. Apparently, this is a restored 1994 Toyota Supra, done by a Dutch company named Stipt Polish Point.

This Supra was found by Rick from Stipt Polish Point. It was restored back to its original form, with every detail reflecting what the coupe was like right off the showroom. Under the hood, it looks like the firm was able to revive the Supra back to life.

With twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six powering the restored Mk4 Supra, it makes up to 325 horsepower (243 kilowatts) and 325 pound-feet (441 Newton-meters) of torque for the European market. It was available with a six-speed manual gearbox or in this video's case, a 4-speed automatic. Its top speed is supposed to be limited to 155 miles per hour (250 kilometers per hour) for the worldwide market.

But, as tested by AutoTopNL on the unrestricted sections of the Autobahn, this Supra can do more. In fact, it was able to reach 165 mph (265 km/h) after a number of tries. For an old timer that went under the knife, this was an impressive feat.

Al menos dos horas, que me vaya tomar un café, que ya los sienten... YA, un café.
Al menos dos horas... ya me conozco yo eso, lo mismo son las 13:00h y sigo allí al solete de final de mayo y luego vienen las prisas.

Así que me he venido para Madrid sin ver el coche siquiera y me he dado un paseo mañanero

El vendedor no podía estar allí por temas familiares, no hay problema, perfecto, no necesitaba compañía y le he devuelto el mensaje de voz comunicando que me quiten del listado de interesados.

El que iba a ver esta tarde, después de tener apalabrada la visita para hoy, quien sea, no puede porque se va a la playa de fin de semana.

Definitivamente me quede estancado en el siglo pasado. No sé si serna señales para que me quede con mi coche, lo acondicione y me esté quietecito.

 

Es increíble la falta de profesionalidad que hay en muchos negocios.

Mi última experiencia es el taller de ruedas "del barrio" (aunque eso era antes de que me mudara. Por favorecer al pequeño comercio allí tenia mis ruedas de invierno/verano con sus dos cambios anuales y varios juegos de neumáticos comprados. Pues entre suciedad en volante, y que ya llevan dos cambios de ruedas que me dan cita y cuando voy las ruedas están desaparecidas y tengo que volver otra vez, decidí ya llevarme las ruedas de allí.

 

Faltas de profesionalidad/educación dan para un libro. O varios.


Hace algún que otro año, me tocó cambiar de ciudad por unos meses. Pues los 3 talleres que encontré, me la liaron de alguna manera. En un caso a la hora de pagar el tio no se fiaba de mí y me hizo ir con él a un bar a cambiar los billetes, argumentando que una vez le habían pagado en billetes falsos. Se ve que me vió cara de estafador y pensó que yo sería el siguiente...

 

Respecto a lo de @Guancho hoy, anda y que les jodan. Sinceramente, desde que empecé leyendo el hilo hasta de ahora, lo último que han mostrado han sido ganas de vender. Y una pena, por que el coche en sí está bien guapo.

Un colega de profesión mío lleva 5 coches comprados. . cuando me lo dijo el otro día no di crédito .
5 coches (no de mil eurista, pero con pocos km y uso ) en distintos sitios de España .
Llegar a Barcelona pej .. y lo que tú dices , el tío ni aparece .
Otro se lo queda un sobrino cuando el hombre está en Granada esperando
Otro no pilla el teléfono en Madrid
Otro que se tuvo que ir un momento a Zaragoza y en una hora vuelve , a las 3 horas.. que que se queda en Zaragoza hasta mañana .
Otro en un concesionario .. si ..si .. concesionario , que lo vendió el compañero por error .

Me dice que debe de estar gafado . j*der , que el tío tiene que hacerse un lote de km desde Galicia para acudir a estas fiestas y no son coches de 20 o 30 mil euros . No hay formalidad ni ganas .

Así me llaman temblandito los clientes que vienen de fuera , que por favor esté ,como si le estuviesen pidiendo un milagro a la virgen del Carmen . A la 1 de la madrugada le cargue a uno de La Rioja el otro día , j*der .. como voy a hacer hacerse a un tío mil kilómetros pa na .

Hablo de lo que hablas de que cambian los planes sin avisarte o importarles si tú tienes otros planes tras la visita o pierdes de hacer algo por ducha visita .
Un colega que quiere comprarse un coche , lleva 5 aceptados y está sin coche aún. . Por cosas como las que te hicieron a ti .

Hablando del Supra... los precios empiezan a bajar por aquí... se los comen con patatas me parece a mí.

 

Lógicamente. Si no te echan ni putísima cuenta cuando muestras interés. Y los coches seguirán llegando a los puntos de venta. A ver qué hacen con ellos. Y los de cambio manual se van a vender menos.
Habrá que esperar a verlos en 35.000€ de segunda mano.

 

El que ví publicado a 55k que supuestamente estaba vendido a 53k (era la versión Fuji, 2.0), ahora está a 47k... no han pasado ni dos meses.

Con un año y 6700 kms...

 

No pago 55.000 por un coche de 4 cilindros así tenga millón y medio de cv, vuele y además sea submarino.

 

Bonito ese Celica..muy bonito: cómo se empeñan algunas otras marcas en hacer coches feos, pues ya se ve que no. Precioso frontal.

 

Por cierto, el Jarama azul que me ofrecieron en 74.000€ antes de presentarse, única unidad para Ex-paña, lo ha matriculado Toyota para prensa. No entiendo a esta gente, de verdad que no.

Me gustó mucho ese coche valorándolo como lo que es, un GT. Mucho más sofisticado, rápido, rígido, ágil y preciso que un 370Z. El cambio automático va bastante en sintonía con el carácter del coche, pero cambiar los hierros uno mismo es otro rollo. Si sabes, claro.

El hilo lo abrió el legionario de la reiteración retratil, no yo. Yo fui a ver el coche y me han echado la misma cuenta que a un perro.
Después del chasco del sábado a mi no me ha llamado ni Cristo.

 

Objetivamente cumplen por prestaciones puramente cuantitativas, pero está claro que les falta mucho intangible bastante tangible.
