Cash-strapped Smart may have announced the formal termination of Roadster production by the end of this year, but the tiny two-seater could well live on in the UK - with a V6 engine. Smart UK is looking into low-volume assembly of the Brabus-developed V6 prototype for the British market (where the Roadster has been the most popular); a small number of cars could be built to order by independent coachbuilder/tuner Brabus for British customers. No final decision has been made yet, but an announcement is expected later this summer.
The Brabus V6 prototype was built for the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show, and was used to promote the Smart brand and the Roadster range throughout 2004, appearing at events such as the London-Brighton Smart run. Its twin-turbo powerplant is essentially two standard three-cylinder 698cc engines bolted together to form a 1396cc V6: this unit produces 168bhp and 162lb ft of torque, giving the featherweight Roadster a power-to-weight ratio to scare Porsches and many an Italian supercar. Acceleration 0-60mph comes up in under six seconds, with a top speed of 137mph. Received with much excitement, many enthusiasts petitioned Smart to put this model into production: and if Smart itself can't, it looks as if Brabus will, with the company's approval.
