Chris Harris Drives The Ferrari F50 | Living Up to The F40?

"I remain convinced this is the most ambitious car Ferrari has ever made." - Chris Harris Following the iconic Ferrari F40, the F50 faced one of the toughest challenges in the history of the supercar. With a 6-speed gated manual gearbox mated to its N/A F1-derived V12, working in harmony with the full-carbon tub that cradles it intimately behind the driver, the F50's drivetrain offers a mesmerising supercar experience, and is in no way any lesser than the F40's.

    KEY FACTS

    • This Ferrari F50 is a sensational analogue supercar, delivered new to rock-and-roll legend Rod Stewart, and boasting an impressive history file.
    • Its engine is a race-derived naturally aspirated 4.7-litre V12, producing 513bhp and 347lb-ft of torque, driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission.
    • Completed in 1996, the car was imported by Maranello Concessionaires Ltd in the UK, and was first registered in June 1997.
    • Records show that the car was shipped from London to Dubai by air in 2002, but the car was back in the UK by 2007.
    • It has been with the seller for more than two-and-a-half years, with six previous keepers showing on the V5C.
    • The odometer shows just 10,998 miles from new, and the car is offered fresh from an annual service and clutch replacement carried out in August 2023.
    EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES

    • Famously, the F50’s engine and gearbox were used as stressed members within the whole construction, while the push-rod suspension featured Bilsten shock absorbers with adaptive damping, and there were Brembo cross-drilled brake discs front and rear.
    • Ferrari Classiche certification for this car was published in 2014, with the ‘red folder’ confirming the original specification of Rosso Corsa over Pelle Nera with Rosso inserts, and noting the car to retain its original matching-numbers engine and gearbox.
    • The car was previously repainted in dark grey, along with a custom retrim of the seats. However, the car was then returned to the original factory specification with paintwork by the renowned Zanasi Group, prior to it receiving Classiche certification.
    • It rides on the correct 8Jx18 front and 13Jx18 rear silver ‘star’ design alloy wheels, manufactured by Speedline for Ferrari.
    • The F50’s interior is a masterclass in minimalism, with a large carbon-fibre trim across the dashboard, manual winding windows, simple knobs for the heating and ventilation controls, and only a handful of other buttons.
    • Accompanying the sale is the Ferrari Classiche ‘red folder’, plus an impressive history file that includes an original registration document showing the car registered to Rod Stewart at the well-known Wood House estate in Epping, a copy of the warranty book page showing it assigned to Rod Stewart in June 1997, and a raft of previous maintenance documentation.
    • Also included is the rare set of F50 lithograph prints, the F50 hard top and flight case, the boot bag and suit carrier, exceptionally rare F50 driver shoes, and two keys.
    • Please note: the cherished registration 'F5 OAB' is not included in the sale.
    CONDITION

    • Please refer to the photo gallery to assess the exterior and interior condition.
    • Specific notes from the seller include: the indicator stalks have a slight stickiness to the coating, which is common on this era of Ferrari.
    • The seller is not aware of any mechanical or electrical faults.
    • The most recent MOT test was on 25 August 2023 at 10,897 miles, which resulted in a first-time pass with no advisories.
    SERVICE HISTORY

    • The last maintenance was in August 2023 at 10,897 miles, carried out by Ferrari dealer Meridien Modena. This comprised an annual service with engine oil and filter, fresh brake fluid, and replacement of the clutch, clutch block, thrust bearing, and release bearing. During this visit, the front and rear brake pads were noted as being 9mm and 10mm respectively, and the brake discs were measured as 31.4mm front and 31.8mm rear. All four tyres were recorded as having ample tread and even wear.
    • Prior to this, Meridien Modena carried out another annual service at 10,609 miles in July 2022.
    • In February 2022 at 10,343 miles, the oil pump seals were replaced, along with the oil sump return pipe seal, and the front main seal. Both cam cover gaskets were also renewed, along with the auxiliary belts, and an air-conditioning pipe o-ring. The air-conditioning filter was changed and the system was recharged.
    • Previous service history is summarised below with regular renewal of the engine oil and brake fluid as documented. The July 2016 service at 9,998 miles by Carrs Exeter also included coolant, and services of both the power steering and gearbox. In May 2015, Carrs Exeter also replaced the full set of spark plugs, the plug cover gasket, split HT leads and the cam cover gaskets.
    • Four new Pirelli P Zero Rosso tyres were fitted by Joe Macari Servicing in June 2014 at 9,948 miles – so they have covered less than 1,000 miles.
    • A new alternator was fitted in 2011 at 8,705 miles by Joe Macari Servicing.
    • In January 2011, Joe Macari Servicing installed a new fuel tank including new internal foam, as well as renewing the seals and filters as required.
    • A letter from The Maranello Concessionaires Archive records warranty work dates on the car between May 1997 at 53 miles and April 2000 at 1,081 miles, and the general manager of Maranello Sales Ltd at the time believes that the car was serviced during this period while it was in for the various warranty jobs.
