This BMW M3 is one of three four-door E36 race cars prepared and campaigned by Prototype Technology Group for BMW North America in IMSA and USRRC competition between 1997 and 2000. Chassis STC 95/002 made its debut at the 1998 24 Hours of Daytona with a GT3 class victory and a sixth-place overall finish before again winning its class at the 12 Hours of Sebring the following month. Over its remaining 11 starts in 1998, the car secured five additional class wins to help BMW and PTG sweep the season’s PSCR and USRRC GT3 manufacturer and team championships. The car was again campaigned by PTG throughout the 1999 USRRC and ALMS seasons before being sold to Genesis Racing in 2000 as PTG shifted its fleet to the E46 platform. The car was purchased in 2006 by the seller, who commissioned an exterior refurbishment in 2014 that included a repaint in the red, white, and black Yokohama/Fina livery worn by the car in 1998. Power is provided by a dry-sump 3.4-liter S50B32 inline-six paired with an Elite IL300 six-speed sequential transmission and a custom-built limited-slip differential. Additional equipment includes Brembo ventilated disc brakes with eight-piston calipers up front and ABS, adjustable coilover suspension, sway bars with in-cockpit adjustment, multipiece center-lock BBS wheels, carbon-composite body panels, an adjustable rear wing, quick jacks, a HANS-compatible RaceTech seat, a cool-suit system, and a fire-suppression system. Under current ownership, the car has participated in various BMW CCA and vintage racing events including the Monterey Motorsports Reunion, Sonoma Historics, and the U.S. Vintage National Championship. This PTG E36 M3 is now offered in California with BMW CCA and NASA logbooks, invoices from current ownership, and a bill of sale.

Founded by Tom Milner, the Virginia-based PTG team was contracted by BMW North America in 1995 to spearhead the development and preparation of the E36 M3 platform for IMSA GT competition. PTG campaigned the resulting race cars to both manufacturer and team IMSA GTS-2 titles in 1996, followed by sweeps of manufacturer, team, and driver titles in GTS-3 in 1997 and both PSCR and USRRC GT3 in 1998. A total of seven E36 chassis were prepared and campaigned by PTG, including four in a two-door configuration and three in four-door form.

This example competed as PTG’s number 10 car in a red, white, and black livery throughout 1998 before wearing a variety of color schemes during its ALMS career through 2001. An exterior refurbishment in 2014 returned the car to its 1998 color scheme with Yokohama/Fina sponsorship and the names of drivers Bill Auberlen and Boris Said on the driver’s door. Various chips and other imperfections in the finish are shown up close in the photo gallery below. Carbon-composite body panels include a trunk lid carrying a PTG-designed adjustable rear wing and a spoiler, fender flares, side skirts, doors, a three-piece rear bumper, a louvered hood, and a front air dam with dive planes and brake-cooling ducts.

Multipiece 18” BBS wheels are secured by hexagonal nuts with retaining springs and are wrapped in Yokohama Advan slicks measuring 280/650 up front and 280/680 at the rear. The car is equipped with ABS, and stopping is handled by eight-piston Brembo calipers acting upon slotted and ventilated discs up front, while ventilated discs are fitted out back.

The cockpit houses a RaceTech seat that was installed in 2020 and features a fiberglass and carbon-Kevlar shell, black upholstery, and a HANS-compatible headrest. Additional equipment includes a roll cage, a Sparco six-point harness, a driver-side window net, a cool-shirt system, a drink-bottle system, a carbon-fiber accelerator pedal, a Motorola radio, and a fire-suppression system. The harness and fire-suppression system are both expired. The dash features the signatures of Tom Milner and Bill Auberlen, each dated 2016.

The OMP steering wheel hosts controls for the radio, drink system, and a Stack configurable digital dash display that also includes an analog tachometer. An AutoMeter 10k-rpm tachometer is positioned to the driver’s left, while a carbon-fiber center stack hosts various lights, switchgear, and fuses. An ENM hour meter shows approximately 120 hours of run time.

The S50B32 inline-six is said to have been modified to bring its displacement to 3.4 liters and features dry-sump lubrication with a trunk-mounted oil reservoir. Induction is through a carbon-fiber airbox and individual throttle bodies. The engine has reportedly accumulated approximately 12.5 hours since its last rebuild, which is said to have been done to endurance specifications. The trunk-mounted Fuel Safe fuel cell was fitted with a replacement Pro Cell bladder in 2017.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via an Elite IL300 6S Evo II six-speed sequential gearbox and a limited-slip differential. The latter was custom built by former PTG crew member Greg Forde in 2017 and features a six-disc clutch system, aluminum mounting bushings, a finned sump, and a cooling system. Suspension incorporates adjustable heim-joint linkages and adjustable coilover shock absorbers, as well as front and rear sway bars that can be adjusted via levers inside the cockpit. Steering is handled via variable-ratio rack and pinion. A rebuilt steering rack was installed in 2011, and the suspension was refreshed in 2012.

The car is shown above in an article covering its 1998 class victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona in a period issue of Roundel magazine. At the wheel during the Daytona victory were Bill Auberlen, Marc Duez, Boris Said, and Peter Cunningham, while others to drive the car during the 1998 season included Mark Simo, Ross Bentley, and Andy Pilgrim. The car also achieved GT3 class wins in 1998 at Las Vegas, Mid-Ohio, Road Atlanta, Minneapolis, and Mosport, as well as a GT3 class win at Lime Rock in 1999.
